Late Prof. S.K. Ananda Thirtha Memorial All India Chess Tourney: Ram Krishnan emerges sole leader

After five rounds, Ram S. Krishnan of BSNL, Tamil Nadu, emerged as the sole leader with five points from five rounds on the opening day of the two-day Late Prof. S.K. Ananda Thirtha Memorial All India FIDE Rating Rapid Chess Tournament-2017, conducted by MDCA jointly with Hoysala Karnataka Sangha, Mysuru, at their auditorium here yesterday.

Mohan Krishna, Professor, Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering, Dr. C. Krishna, retd. Director, DPE, University of Mysore, H. Ramesh, Syndicate Member, UoM, P.V. Bharadwaj, President, Hoysala Karnataka Sangha, K.R. Shivarame Gowda, Secretary, MDCA.

Nine players sixth-seeded Duta Joydeep of West Bengal, fifth-seeded K. Sethilmaran of Tamil Nadu, ninth-seeded Karthik Venkataraman of Andhra Pradesh, A.I. Muthaiah of Tamil Nadu,  IM K. Sharma Dinesh of Uttar Pradesh,  Swaraj Palit of Jharkhand, P. Saravana Krishnan of Tamil Nadu, A. Balkishan of Karnataka and N. Lokesh of Tamil Nadu are tied with 4.5 points each and are placed from second to tenth in the rankings.

In the fourth round, Karnataka’s A. Balkishan playing black on the top board shocked the top-seed IM S. Sathyapragyan and created the first biggest upset of the Tourney.

Top-seed S. Sathyapragyan is placed 12th in the rankings after five rounds with 4 points.

Senthil Maran (4.5), FM Dutta Joydeep (4.5) drew with Swaraj Palit (4.5), A. Balkishan (4.5) drew N. Lokesh (4.5), G.V. Srinivas Rao (3.5) lost to P Saravana Krishnan (4.5), M. Abhijith (3.5) lost to S. Satyapragyan (4), M.P. Ajith (3.5) drew with AIM Pankaj Bhat (3.5), L. Seshadri (3) lost to S. Athul Krishna (4), Ramachandra Bhat (4) bt R. Thirumurugan (3).
