Mysore/Mysuru: Twenty-four-year-old Nagaratnamma has given birth to a baby girl weighing 4 kgs at Motherhood Hospital in city.

 The baby girl born is the heaviest in the district, by a normal delivery. It is a rare case for Indian baby’s weight as a normal baby weight is around 2.5 to 3.5 kg at birth.

It was the patient’s first pregnancy and was visiting the hospital for regular medical examinations. Throughout the pregnancy, she was healthy and the result of all her scans were normal. Later, she showed spontaneous onset of labour pain in her 9th month of pregnancy.

On admission she was assisted with the necessary care and treatment. She experienced prolonged labour for 22 hours and was given the requisite medication and medical assistance. On delivering the baby girl, a team of Neonatologists and Paediatricians monitored the heart rate to ensure stability and good health. 

Dr. Shweta Nayak, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and Gynae Laparoscopic Surgeon, Motherhood Hospital, said, “Everyone was taken by surprise in the delivery room, as it is one of the rare cases our staff has witnessed. It was a complicated situation, as there were chances of the baby getting stuck and suffer asphyxia (lack of oxygen & nutrients to the brain). But in the end, baby, and mother both were doing good, post-delivery.”

Dr. B. Chetan, Consultant Neonatologist at Motherhood Hospital, said, “Generally having large babies is a family trait. These babies sometimes incur birth injuries to bones and nerves, as delivering them is a challenge. But our obstetrics team at Motherhood Hospital did an excellent job by delivering this baby safe, normally.” The mother and the baby were discharged on the 3rd day in stable condition, said B.
