The District Health and Family Welfare Department will observe National Dengue Day on May 16 in order to create public awareness on the dangers of the deadly disease. Dengue is spread by a species of Mosquito called as Aedes Aegypti. Fever is the main symptom of the disease, which catches up 3-14 days after mosquito bite.
The precautionary measures to be taken include emptying of water collected in plastic containers, buckets, old automotive tyres, flower pots, coconut shells etc., at least once a week, water utensils and containers must be closed, aerosol must be used during day to ward off mosquitoes, use of curtains during sleep etc., The public are asked to undergo a check-up at their nearest Health Centre if they are affected with fever and develop other symptoms of the disease.
