Mysuru Airport runway expansion – Acquire 91 acres more for future projects: MP tells KIADB Officers

June 2, 2023

Mysore/Mysuru: Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha has directed the Officers from Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) and Karnataka State Small Industries Development Corporation (KSSIDC) Limited (the nodal agency that will oversee the transfer of land) to acquire an additional 91 acres of land for future expansion of the Mysuru Airport that is poised to be developed as an International Airport.

This land will be in addition to the 160 acres for which the final notification has already been issued by the KIADB and the 46-acre land that is yet to be acquired.

The MP was chairing a meeting of Officers from KIADB, KSSIDC, Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC), Minor Irrigation, Airports Authority of India (AAI) represented by new Mysuru Airport Director Anup and transferred Director R. Manjunath, who has now been appointed as the Director of Darbhanga Airport in Bihar.

The meeting was held at Jaladarshini Guest House this morning where the MP asked the KIADB Special Land Acquisition Officer (SLAO) Priyadarshini to send a proposal to the State Government to acquire an additional 91 acres to facilitate future expansion and also to facilitate the runway expansion of 2,750 metres (45 metres wide) from the existing 1,740 metres (30 metres wide).

“We have 490 acres now where the Airport stands and with the addition of 160 and 46 acres, we will be in a comfortable position for expansion. We need more land (91 acres) in case the runway has to be expanded to 3,500 metres,” the MP noted.

The BJP Government approved Rs. 320 crore for the airport expansion, with Rs. 150 crore already deposited with the KIADB for land acquisition purposes. Once the land is transferred to the Airport Authority of India, the second phase of airport expansion will commence. “I will discuss the issue with Chief Minister Siddharamaiah to release the pending funds,” the MP assured and asked                                        the officers to fast-track the land acquisition process.

Compensation at a rate of Rs. 1.5 crore per acre needs to be disbursed for the 160 acres that has been notified. The MP instructed CESC officials to determine the number of electricity poles requiring relocation, while the Minor Irrigation Department emphasised the importance of canal realignment and diversion.

The CESC officers told the MP that they would need Rs. 58 crore for electricity poles relocation while the Minor Irrigation Department sought Rs. 70 crore for canal realignment and diversion. The MP asked the officers to send their proposals to the Government. The MP informed the officers that the proposal to construct an underpass beneath the runway has been abandoned due to security concerns and the potential challenges and cost escalation associated with its construction. Instead, the Mysuru-Nanjangud Highway will be diverted as the alignment of the Highway intersects perpendicularly with the runway.

Consequently, additional land will be acquired for the diversion of the Highway. This will result in an increase of approximately 5 to 7 kms in the distance between Mysuru and Nanjangud.

Good to acquire additional land and if possible enough to have a second runway. In future as population grows there might be need for giant planes like A380 for Indian airports as there might be limited landing slots in peak hours and the need of a country with 3 billion population then will be these giant planes and to land them you need atleast 3000 meters runway with 45 meters width.Thinking for the future by Mr.Simha is well appreciated. Also Mysuru being close to Bengaluru can become an MRO ( maintenance repair & overhaul ) hub for Bengaluru Mangaluru Kochi and Goa Airports.Airlines will be willing to send their planes as it is close to these airports. Also have enough land to have extra hangers as parking of planes in bigger airports will be a problem in future and hence many airlines will provide connectivity to mysuru just to park their planes in mysuru in the night as parking fee will be less compared to Bengaluru and airports which have land shortage.
And finally we all look up to our city to become like Singapore ,and one example I would like to point out is that Singapore Airlines which like any other airlines which had cut pay during Covid-19 ,has now after a record profitable year has given 8 months Salary, yes 8 months salary as bonus to employees .This is one quality that Indian companies especially in tourism industry learn from Singapore Airlines.

Most of the times, those living in this city and those politicians who are elected to represent this city miss many indicators.
For example, ignoring for the time the prattle of @Sanjay Kini, who totally misses, what others like the Kerala CM, for example are planning when this Airport gets expanded to receive the medium haul jetliners like A320/Boeing 737 is to use this airport as a 5th Kerla airport in its operations.
Kerala has 4 international airports, all of them focused on the traffic to and fro from the Gulf States, where its citizens a work in greater numbers than from any other state in India. In cosidering this airport as their 5th airport, the Kerala CM and their politicians are signalling too that they are establishing stronger links with Mysore, which they consider as lense densely settled. Already, more Keralites are arriving to settle in Mysore , via Wayanad-Nanjangud route. The Kerla CM is deamnding a railway tunnel underneath the Bandipur forest to link to Kerala.
So far, the BJP government in Karanataka was able to convince Narendra Modi and his government that this airport is for the use for the cityand its residents, and that the railway tunnel mentioned destroys the Bandipur ecology.
With the formation of Congress government, the unique Karanataka-Modi government link is broken. Modi is likely to favour Kerala CM, as he sees there an opportunity to get more BJP MPs and MLAs there, by favouring Kerala.
Just last year, Modi stopped over Abu Dhabi, lon his way from the G& meeting in Munich as an obswerver, and met a cluster of Keralite businessmen who are settled there. They assured him of their contribution to the development of this city. The way they convinced Modi was to approve non-stop Abu Dhabi- Mysore flights a few times in a week. What these businessmen , a few of them at least in reality, want, is to expand their gold smuggling and Hawaal money laundering operations to Myosore-Bangalore corridor, now that there is a 10-lane highway functioning.
Properties and lands in Mysore are being bought for the above operations.
The spectare of this expanded airport for internal use of India becomes minimal as this Gulf States-Myosre traffic grows very fast. Not a good sign.
The mention of Singapore works in another sense.
Singapore hospitals are receiving increasing numbers of patients from Mysore and Bangalore, and recently, they hare planning to put together a healthcare package that facilitates quick and easy access to their expertise through Singapore Airlines conveying withn patients with a one stop flight from Mysore to Singapore. Given the high reputation of Singapore medical experts- a number of them were called in for consultation , when Jayalalithaa, the Tamila Nadu CM was in the intensive care at the Appollo hospital in Chennai.
This will mean the plethora of private hospitals and clinics in this city will take a large hit.
The above are the consequences of this city airport expansion, rather than the mundane tourists flights to other parts of India.
In my opinion, this air[ort exapnsion to receive jet aircraft becomes a massive unwelcome development of this city, and the wound inflicted on the current city population by the Karanataka politicians in ;power. Keral CM, Kerala politicians and Keralites will become the beneficiaries.

  3. Purushotham says:

First mistake they did was construction of Airport in an area surrounding 3 big lakes and very fertile agriculture land close to kabini river.

It should have been constructed near yelwal so that dry areas could have been utilised not fertile agriculture area with canals, River plus lakes

  4. Purushotham says:

Expansion towards HD Kote road is good option because Airport can accessd from both HD KOTE road and Nanjangudu Road 2 entrances so traffic can be split.

And only Railway line is there constructing Tunnel over railway track is less expensive than constructing Tunnel over 6 Lane highway

Now with extra 5 KM journey for every vehicle traveling to Nanjangudu after new diversion road it will more petrol and diesel plus time waste

  5. Sam says:

    Hey Purushotham
You are tinkering at the edges, I should say with ignorance.
The biggest mistake was to expand the airport to receive medium-haul jetbpassenger aircraft like the A320, which can fly non-stop comfortably 1600 miles. Hence, the Gulf States are within a non-stop reach. That is the reason, Keralites are urging about the airport expansion, which can bring in a large number of them working in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Oman etc.. to Mysore for visits, and to buy properties. If you have taken census in Mysore recently, the largest numbers of immigrants are from Kerala.
Mysore Police are struggling to contain the criminal activities involved in Hawaala money -related enforcement- The SOM reported last year that cars were stopped in the Wayanad-Nanjangud road, by a group of people, bearing lathis to eject the passengers, who were then driven away. Just look at the amount of gold coming to Mysore now, and is laundered in jewellery shops in Mysore. This will multiply many btimes.
    The
I also agree that Singapore Airlines officials are theirasking Mysoreans who are visiting Singapore about the purpose of their visits which have becomes frequent.. A single stop over will take A320 to Singapore and Bangkok. Now, think about Bangkok and what is it famous for.
Mysore is looking at destruction on a scale brought about by unintended criminal activities and immigration never seen before
