Mysore/Mysuru: On the occasion of the birth centenary of T.S. Satyan, one of the India’s foremost photojournalists, Museum of Art & Photography (MAP) has organised a photo exhibition at its premises, No. 22, Kasturba Road, Shanthala Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Benagluru, on Aug. 12.

Satyan, who was a resident of Saraswathipuram in Mysuru, passed away at the age of 86 on Dec. 13, 2009.

According to a press release from MAP, the expo titled ‘With great ease: The photography of T.S. Satyan’ is an exhibition that highlights Satyan’s photographs of politicians, refugees, workers, hospitals, schools,  across the country and also contact sheets, articles written by Satyan, his first camera, which his English Professor helped him to buy.

The exhibition seeks to look beyond Satyan’s photo-journalistic work and reframes him as a photographer who deeply cared about the people he photographed, more than the frame and composition.

His photographs show the empathy with which he looked at people, with kindness                                               and admiration. His photographic style was marked by an effortless fluidity, his images were not meticulously planned or overly staged, instead reflecting honesty and genuine curiosity.

As one of India’s earliest photojournalists, Satyan saw the lens as an unbiased recorder, who went on to capture some of the country’s most important historical milestones.

“Satyan’s photographs breathe life into the fleeting moments, capturing the delicate nuances of human connection and vulnerability. Known as a photojournalist, and to celebrate his centenary, this exhibition explores a different side of Satyan — that of a photographer with an unique view and authorship,” says Kamini Sawhney, Director of MAP.
