Workshop on research, publication skills at Philomena’s College held

Mysore/Mysuru: A national-level workshop on “Empowering the Art of Research and Publication Skills” was held at St. Philomena’s College, Department of Post-Graduation Studies in Social Work, Research Development Cell (RDC), and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). 

The event attracted more than 30 participants, including students, faculty, and research scholars, for a day of enriching insights and hands-on learning. The workshop featured Dr. K.S. Ali, Deputy Librarian, and Assistant Professor from Central Library and the Department of Library & Information Science at Yenepoya University, Mangaluru as the distinguished resource person. 

The morning session was mar-ked by the launch of “A Handbook for Social Work Practice in Mysuru” by Dr. Noor Mubasheer, PG Dean. Prof. Othbert Pinto, PG Director, emphasised the role of technology, observation, knowledge, and innovation in driving societal change. 

Dr. Ravi J.D. Saldanha, Principal, highlighted the importance of research skills acquisition in the context of the NEP-2020. Attendees delved into the significance of scholarly publications within academic institutes, gaining insights into available platforms, University ranking agencies and the benefits of scholarly publication. 

Dr. Ali provided a compre-hensive understanding of prominent research indexing services and shed light on the distinction between index, non-index and predatory journals, educating participants about potential publication scams.

The afternoon session provided participants with practical exercises on laptops, enhancing their understanding of research and publication tools. Dr. Ali conducted interactive sessions on the use of Mendeley Desktop and published articles in suitable journals using tools.

 The workshop equipped participants with the knowledge and skills essential for successful research and publication endeavours. Rev. Dr. Bernard Prakash Barnis, Rector, Rev. Fr. Christopher, Asst. to Rector, Sherly Antony, Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work were present.
