State ‘Sangeetha Vidwan’ Award for Dr. Padma Murthy

CM to present award at Mysore Palace on Oct. 15

Mysore/Mysuru: Renowned Music Scholar of Bengaluru Dr. Padma Murthy has been selected for the State ‘Sangeetha Vidwan’ Award this year. She will be conferred the award by Chief Minister Siddharamaiah during the inauguration of Dasara cultural programmes at the Mysore Palace premises on Oct.15.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh and a citation. A panel headed by Pandit Dr. Narasimhulu  Vadavati selected renowned Karnatak Classical Vocalist Dr. Padma Murthy for the award.

The 91-year-old Dr. Padma Murthy has a Mysuru connection. Born to freedom fighter T.S. Rajagopal Iyengar and Jayalakshmi on July 24, 1932, Dr. Padma trained under Music stalwarts Mysore Vasudevacharya, Piteel Chowdaiah, T. Puttaswamaiah, Thitte Krishna Iyengar, Ralapalli  Ananthakrishna Sharma and others.

She learnt Veena from noted musicians H.S. Krishnamurthy and R.S. Keshavamurthy. Her husband T.S. Murthy is a renowned violinist.

Getting a Doctorate Degree from Bangalore University for her thesis on ‘The Psychology of Music’, Dr. Padma headed the Department of Performing Arts of Bangalore University. She also served as a member of Experts Committee of Madras Music Academy. She has conducted many musical concerts across the globe.

Among the many awards and prizes she has won include the Vidyaratna Award of Parthasarathy Sangeetha Sabha, Madras, Artist of the Year Award given by Bengaluru Gaayana Samaja and Karnataka Kalashree Award given by Karnataka Sangeetha-Nrutya Academy.
