Alleged harassment by wife, family for property: Young farmer ends life

December 22, 2023

Periyapatna: A farmer, unable to bear the alleged harassment by his wife and her family members for property, committed suicide by consuming poison at his farm land in Koodihalli village, Periyapatna taluk on Dec. 15.

The deceased farmer is Mohanraj (27), a resident of Kelloru village in the taluk. Mohanraj, who was in love with 21-year-old Bindu, had married her at a temple in Gaddige in Hunsur taluk about eight months back without informing his family members.

Mohanraj’s father Mahadeva, who came to know about his son’s marriage, brought his son and daughter-in-law and got them married at Mathrushree Kalyana Mantap in Ravandur.

After a few days, Mohanraj and Bindu settled down at Boganahalli village. Later, Mohanraj, seeking a share in property, had lodged a complaint against his father at Periyapatna Police Station.

Meanwhile, a settlement was held in the presence of Kelloru and Boganahalli village heads and Mohanraj was given one and half acre land and a barn.

Not satisfied with the property share, Bindu, her father Mahadeva, mother Sakamma and her relative Beeresh, began to harass Mohanraj to bring more share following which Mohanraj became depressed.

On Dec. 15, he consumed poison at his farm land and was lying there following which his family members admitted him to K.R. Hospital in Mysuru, where he breathed his last on Dec. 18 evening.

Based on the complaint from Mohanraj’s father Mahadeva, Periyapatna Police, who have registered a case are investigating.
