Book to create awareness on consumer rights released

January 1, 2024

Mysore/Mysuru: A book titled ‘Grahakane Raja’ was brought out by Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP), Mysuru unit, to create awareness among consumers, during National Consumer Day and Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Panchayat, organised at Pandit Puttaraju Gawai Stadium, J.P. Nagar in the city recently.

Speaking after releasing the book, writer and retired Dy.SP J.B. Rangaswamy set the tone by explaining about the ill-effect of plastic. A horse named ‘Rana Prathap’ died after consuming plastic during the Torchlight Parade in Mysuru Dasara, said Rangaswamy along with corroborating examples.

The public should be first aware of consumer rights and what and why associated with the rights. The key aspects related to consumers  is succinctly explained in the book ‘Grahakane Raja.’

The deceptive methods used to lure customers and cheat them by charging more on MRP inclusive of tax. How we hurry to buy the goods without doing any check on their genuineness are all narrated in detail in the book. Most of the hospitals are raking in a moolah by charging exorbitantly, but still we won’t raise the voice despite being taken for a ride, said Rangaswamy, citing his personal experience.

He also cautioned the people against developing a feeling of inferiority towards the medicines available at a lesser price at generic medicine shops.

“Be it anywhere or anybody, in case of any cheating one should raise their voice. We should be aware of our rights and also create awareness among the public,” said Rangaswamy.

President of ABGP, Mysuru unit, Chandrashekar, retired Bank employee and advocate Ravindra, Executive Committee members Dr. G.V. Ravishankar, President of J.P. Nagar Senior Citizens Forum Basavaraj, General Secretary Vikram Iyengar, Vice-President Jaykumar, Doreswamy, Women’s leader Nagamani, Darshan Murthy and others were present.
