Mysuru: JSS Medical College and Hospital, Mysuru along with Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, has organised a seminar and awareness camp on Thalassemia at the Paediatric Seminar Hall, JSS Hospital here on Aug. 13 from 10 am to 1 pm.

Thalassemia is caused by variant or missing genes that affects the process of haemoglobin synthesis, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. People with Thalassemia make less haemoglobin and have fewer circulating red blood cells than normal, which results in anaemia requiring lifelong blood transfusions.

This disorder could be prevented by undergoing certain tests before their marriage to ascertain the genes they carry with respect to Thalassemia. Only option of cure for this condition is bone marrow transplant.

The seminar aims to create awareness among patients and parents about the causes and major symptoms of Thalassemia. Pallavi, Blood Bank Officer, JSS Hospital, will deliver talks on various aspects of Thalassemia.

The seminar will be followed by a screening camp and consultations with Dr. Sunil Bhat and Dr. Shobha Badiger.
