Maharani Devajammani post card released

May 21, 2024

Mysore/Mysuru: Former Kuvempu Bhasha Bharathi Chairman Dr. Pradhan Gurudatta and Senior Superintendent of Post Offices of Mysuru Division Dr. Angel Raj released Maharani Devajammanni Post Card that has the caption ‘Maharani Devajammani – The Indian Queen who modelled for the worlds first vaccine’ at a programme organised by Anveshana Seva Trust at Pathrakartara Bhavan here yesterday.

Devajammani, wife of the erstwhile Mysore ruler Krishnaraja Wadiyar-III, was the first to receive the vaccine for Small Pox in the kingdom, which had motivated the people to get vaccinated against the dreaded disease. Now, the Postal Department has brought out this post card in her honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Gurudatta said that Maharani Devajammani is prominent among those who served the society without much public attention. Pointing out that it was she who broke the shackles of the then feudal lords, he said that the Maharani was instrumental in Mysore Kingdom attaining glory under Wadiyars.

Noting that Small Pox (Sidubu in Kannada) was a deadly pandemic those days, Dr. Gurudatta highlighted the efforts made by Devajammani for eradicating the disease. It is laudable that the Postal Department has brought out a post card in her honour, he added.

Dr. Angel Raj, in her address, said that it is matter of pride for everyone as Devajammani led the way by becoming the first person to get vaccinated for the deadly Small Pox disease. The Postal Department has brought out a nationwide post card in memory of her, she said adding that this will help in publicising Devajammani’s achievement.
