Maintenance of heritage buildings in Mysuru

June 25, 2024

Sir,

This is in response to the news item in Star of Mysore dated June 13, which quotes MP Yaduveer Wadiyar’s opinion about the non-demolition of Devaraja Market, Lansdowne Building and others.

Heritage buildings need to be preserved to showcase the heritage status of any city and Mysuru, a historic city, is home to many iconic and heritage buildings. Unfortunately, many of these buildings are in a very dilapidated state and require restoration.

When considering restoration, we should look to European cities, especially those in Germany. There, churches, castles, and buildings that were almost destroyed by bombings have been meticulously restored and rebuilt using the original architecture and salvageable portions of the old buildings.

Our authorities and politicians need to take cues from those city administrators.

Regarding the Hill ropeway, as seen in several places in India and abroad, it does not harm the ecosystem. Instead, it preserves the environment by reducing the number of fuel-driven vehicles that pollute the air.
