August 14, 2024

Mysore/Mysuru: Mysore Open Forum has organised a talk on ‘Responsible AI in the times of Generative AI’ by Dr. Carolyn Watters, Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, at 10.30 am on Aug. 18  at Kalpa Kshetra Auditorium in Vijayanagar 4th Stage, 1st Phase, Mysuru. The talk is open to all. Interested may call Mob: 94498-19536.

Profile: Dr. Carolyn Watters, Professor Emeritus at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, has served as the Dean of Graduate Studies and subsequently as the Provost and Vice-President Academic for      the University.

While Dean of Graduate studies and Provost, she led many international initiatives to build collaborative programmes with Universities and governments. On secondment from Dalhousie University, Dr. Watters served as the inaugural Chief Digital Research Officer of the National Research Council Canada 2019-2021.

In service to the larger community, Dr. Watters has chaired the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission, served as President of the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies, and served as a board member to national organisations, including the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and Advisor to Mitacs, a national funding agency to enhance industrial and social innovation.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) has become a global phenomenon raising the promise of revolutionary impacts on economic and social systems, both nationally and internationally. At the same time, these expectations are driving a growing recognition of potential harm from lack of transparency, bias, hallucinations, and increased demand for computing power.

In this talk she will discuss both the path of AI development leading to the natural language Generative AI, like ChatGPTs, that we see today and the current status of Responsible AI policies and regulations to attempt to regulate the impact of these systems on people.
