Mysuru: Sugama Sangeetha Workshop by well-known musician Ratnamala Prakash has been organised under the auspices of Mysore Anathaswamy Memorial Trust on Dec. 21 and 22.

Profile: A Mysurean by birth, Ratnamala Prakash is a well-known name in the field of music. She was initiated into Karnatak Classical Music, at a very young age by her father, doyen of Karnatak Music Dr. R.K. Srikantan. Her foray into Sugama Sangetha (light music) began under the tutelage of Padmacharan and Mysore Ananthaswamy.

L. Vaidyanathan, C. Ashwath, M. Ranga Rao, Vijaya Bhaskar, Rajan-Nagendra, Hamsalekha are some of the Music Directors who have recorded her melodious voice along with stalwarts like Dr. Rajkumar, SPB, Yesudas.

‘Tangaaliyante baalalli bande…’  with Dr. Rajkumar from the movie Guri, ‘Santhasa Araluva Samaya…,’ a duet with SPB from the movie Elu Suttina Kote, ‘Meru giriyaane neeli kadalaane…’ with K.J. Yesudas from the movie SP Sangliyana Part II are some of the evergreen songs that she has sung.

For her dedicated service to music, Ratnamala has been bestowed with many awards, Karnataka Kalashree Award by Karnataka Sangeetha Nrithya Academy (1990), Kannada Rajyotsava Award by the Government of Karnataka (1991),  Santa Shishunala Sharif Award by the Kannada and Culture Department, Government of Karnataka (2016) and the prestigious  Sangeet Natak Academy Award for Other Major Traditions of Music-Sugama Sangeetha in the year 2016.

She has many recordings to her credit, she has conducted many music workshops and given lecture demonstrations.
