Suggestions to ease traffic chaos on Mysuru-Hunsur Road

August 30, 2017

Sir,

On all working days between 8.45 – 9.15 in the morning and 5.45 – 6.15 in the evening, traffic jumble up at three road junctions — Hootagalli, Belawadi and Lingadevarakoppal — on Mysuru-Hunsur National Highway (NH) resulting in loss of valuable time in every junction and  risking the lives of riders. Indisciplined vehicular movement and inappropriate infrastructure are the main cause for this chaos. Here are a  few suggestions to ease the traffic flow:

Hootagalli junction: Though it is managed by a Traffic Police, it is suggested to increase the GREEN ON time by another 6 seconds on the NH and reduce 3 seconds on perpendicular road. Also curb movement of bikes, scooter and smaller four-wheelers on footpath by elevating its height.

Belawadi junction: Sometimes managed by a Traffic Warden, movement of vehicles in and out of a popular petrol bunk in the junction and illegally breached divider adds up to the chaos.

Post a Traffic Police (not a Traffic Warden) during peak hours till signal light is installed and for long run, an underpass between Belawadi village and Industrial area is a must. And, strengthen the breached road divider at all locations upto Yelwal.

Lingadevarakoppal junction:  A Police check-post exists for security recording purpose.  Here the road junction is not perpendicular and the road opening is too small, added by the check-post speed regulation  the vehicles get choked.  So, realigning the junction in line with the existing side roads, and a traffic signal light would ease the traffic. OR close the MMC diversion path  permanently; let the deviation be taken at Brahmakumaris junction.

Industrial set up just after St. Joseph’s School, Lingadevarakoppal: Rain water gets accumulated in half of the road for quite a distance because the industry has closed the drain to have an aesthetic  look, thus compelling vehicles to take extreme right to avoid water puddle, resulting in accidents.  Re-establishing the  drain to carry rain water would avoid accidents.
