Mysuru: Observing that getting a prize for Photos and Videos should not be the only yardstick for the profession, noted columnist G.L. Tripurantaka, who is also the Co-ordinator of Suttur JSS school, said that every photo or video should stick on to the saying  that ‘a single photo can explain in one go, when it takes  a thousand words to explain.’  

He was speaking at a professional workshop organised for media persons by Mysuru Pathrakarthara Snehakoota at the Institution of Engineers on JLB Road here yesterday.

Pointing out that quality photos and videos can be shot from today’s cell phones, he said that advanced technology is helping us to take photos from minute germs  to Satellites and the Moon. However, there is a general perception that the quality of photos and videos shot from cell phones are not up to the mark and this perception should go.

Stressing on the need for being naturalistic  rather than going for stage management while taking photos and videos during inauguration of a programme or any other event, he said that photographers and videographers should always strive for maintaining quality.

Senior Photographer Rajaram in his speech, said that of late, newspapers are not giving much importance to photographs. Allotment of at least 40 percent of the page space for photographs, will help in making the paper more attractive and thus draw public attention.

Bemoaning that the number of readers of newspapers are decreasing, he argued that being insensitive to photographs may be one of the reasons for the decline. He expressed concern that quality is getting sacrificed because of the urgency of photographers in their race for attending a number of events or programmes. Contending that a good number of people have resorted to social media for earning money, Rajaram said that however, the social media has failed to earn the trust of viewers. It is important to note that newspapers have been successful in retaining the trust of readers for a long time and this is why newspapers have still remained very much relevant in the minds of the people.
