Mysore/Mysuru: In a celebration of melody and heritage, Swaralaya Sangeetha Samsthe at Ramakrishnanagar, recently co-hosted a cultural spectacle, ‘Swaralaya Samskrutika Vaibhava-2025,’ in collaboration with Kannada and Culture Department, Bengaluru, at Sri Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha on JLB Road in city. The event, a continued series, was inaugurated by music teacher, Vidu. H.V. Vasavamba.
Addressing the gathering, she emphasised the profound power of music, stating, “Listening to music dispels mental anxieties and worries, fostering tranquillity and enhancing memory. In our daily lives, amidst the pressures of constant demands, immersing ourselves in Karnatak classical or any other form of music lightens the mind and invigorates the spirit. Such is the incredible strength of music.”
She lauded Vidushi Suma Harinath, Founder-President of Swaralaya, for organising such events each year. “Her commendable efforts reflect her truly humble personality. Regardless of a student’s background, she patiently imparts musical knowledge through both online and offline mediums,” she added.
Call to embrace musical roots
Vidushi Sukanya, a distinguished music teacher specialising in vocal and veena, who was the chief guest, spoke about Mysuru’s rich legacy in art, culture and heritage. “Since the advent of World Music Day, musical events have flourished across nations. Interestingly, in recent times, foreigners are embracing Karnatak classical music with enthusiasm. However, it’s disheartening to see our own people showing a step-motherly attitude to learning it,” she lamented, urging a renewed focus on learning music, dance, painting and musical instruments.
‘Dedicate an hour to music’
Dr. Swarnamba Lokesh, a patron of arts and a medical professional, who was a special invitee, shared her deep passion for the arts since childhood. Stating that many aspire to learn music but are constrained by their professional lives, she offered a simple yet profound piece of advice: “From your 24 hours in a day, dedicate an hour to music. We must adapt to time, for time will not adapt to us.”
The programme also featured a talk by vocalist K. Savitha. Following the stage proceedings, the audience was treated to a vibrant folk singing performance by Somashekar’s troupe. This was followed by a drama titled ‘Swadeshi Sangeetha Videshi Vidyarthi’, directed by Vidushi Suma Harinath. G. Anagha enthralled with her mesmerising Bharatanatyam.
Swaralaya team presented their theme song, ‘Alaya Swaralaya Sangeetada Nilaya.’ Vidushi Suma Harinath presided. Geetha Srihari rendered the invocation. Swaralaya Secretary H.S. Sreekanthamani welcomed and compered.
