Acute shortage of guides at University of Mysore

August 24, 2025

Sir,

The University of Mysore (UoM) has always occupied an esteemed place among the Universities of India for over a century. Prof. N.K. Lokanath, the present Vice-Chancellor of UoM, has recently outlined several initiatives to enhance the Varsity’s reputation and quality of education, and many Departments have already benefited from his efforts.

In line with his vision, new courses & disciplines have been introduced to stay relevant with changing academic and industry needs, research excellence has been promoted for which the UoM is recognised, and significant steps in Institutional Development have been taken.

The University has been awarded the status of Institution of Excellence and University with Potential for Excellence, which stand as notable achievements under his leadership.

Speaking to SOM on Aug. 20, the VC, however, shared his disappointment that this year entrance tests for over 20 courses had to be cancelled due to poor response, and 9 courses which received fewer than 15 applications now face the possibility of being shut down. One can understand his pain as he shoulders such a mammoth task.

On a personal note, I cleared the December 2024 Ph.D entrance exam in Sociology at the age of 70, securing 5th rank in the University. However, since both capable lady guides in the Department have already reached their quota, I remain a Doctoral Scholar in waiting.

I am not alone in this situation; several students across other disciplines are also facing similar predicaments. While some have resorted to protest, others like me hold on to positive, silent hope — especially as the University has already issued an advertisement to enhance the number of guides in departments where the need is pressing.

Every institution has its ups and downs. I firmly believe that UoM, under Vice-Chancellor Prof. Lokanath’s leadership, and with the support of Registrar M.K. Savitha, a KAS officer of repute, and Evaluation Registrar Prof. Nagaraja, will soon rise above current challenges and continue its legacy of excellence.
