Crackdown on drugs: Offenders face up to one year in jail

November 16, 2025

Mysore/Mysuru: In a determined push to make Mysuru a drug-free city, the City Police have intensified their crackdown on the sale, possession and consumption of narcotics. Taking a firm stance against drug peddlers, the Police aim to free the city’s youth from the grip of addiction that endangers their future and the well-being of  their families.

As part of the heightened campaign, night patrols have been strengthened across the city to curb the sale and use of ganja and other narcotic substances. In 2025 alone, the Police have registered 395 cases and arrested 423 individuals in connection with drug-related offences.

In recent operations, the Police carried out surprise raids at tea stalls and public gathering points across Mysuru. Several individuals involved in the sale, consumption or transportation of narcotics were taken into custody and subjected to detailed questioning.

Police have warned that anyone found engaging in such activities will be booked under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and could face up to one year of imprisonment. So far, 7,129 petty cases and 3,770 COTPA cases have been registered, according to Mysuru City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, who spoke to Star of Mysore.

Alongside enforcement, the Police are conducting awareness programmes in schools, colleges, youth organisations, parks and other public spaces to discourage the use of ganja, opium and other narcotic substances.
