Mysuru City Railway Station redevelopment: Suggestions

November 21, 2025

Sir,

Recently, there was a report in Star of Mysore about the expansion of Mysuru City Railway Station by constructing more platforms and stabling lines.

The proposed land acquisition and demolition of existing staff quarters around the Mysuru Railway Station, driven by the South Western Railway’s (SWR) plan, are likely to diminish green space and increase commercialisation at the Station. This could erode the Station’s environmental quality and affect the surrounding neighbourhood.

To address congestion and improve passenger convenience, it is prudent to explore and develop alternative Railway Stations within and around the city, such as the Ashokapuram Station, which has already been developed as a model Railway Station.

This diversification would provide travellers with more boarding options and reduce pressure on Mysuru Station. By distributing passenger flow across multiple Stations, city can preserve green cover and reduce environmental impact while maintaining efficient rail connectivity.

It is essential to balance modernisation with sustainable development: Any new developments should prioritise open public access, adequate green buffers and responsible land use to avoid compromising urban liveability.

Strategic planning should include stakeholder engagement, transparent land-use assessments and phased implementation to minimise displacement and ensure that improvements at other Stations genuinely enhance traveller convenience without compromising the city’s ecological footprint.
