February 5, 2026

Srirangapatna: A 78-year-old woman, who had jumped into Cauvery River near Wellesley Bridge, Srirangapatna, in an attempt to end her life, has been rescued by the villagers yesterday.

The woman has been identified as Gundamma, a resident of Bendaravadi village in Chamarajanagar district.

Fed up with frequent family feuds, the woman, who came to Srirangapatna, jumped into Cauvery River in a bid to end her life. As the water flow was low in the River, she was not completely drowned. Local residents V. Suresh and Khizer Ahmed, who were walking on the bridge, saw the woman struggling in the water, jumped into the river and rescued her.

Suresh and Khizer, who brought her to the river bank, took her house address and mobile number, only to tell them about the incident, besides informing the Town Police Station. Later, Gundamma’s grandson, who arrived at the Police Station, took his grandmother home.

A case has been registered at Srirangapatna Police Station.
