Hit-and-run: Woman killed as crane hits scooter

Nanjangud: A woman was killed on the spot while her husband sustained serious injuries when a crane hit the scooter they were riding in front of Prasanna Nanjundeshwara Temple at Chikkayyana Chatra on Mysuru-Ooty Highway in the taluk yesterday. The driver of the crane reportedly drove away the vehicle after the accident.

While the deceased has been identified as Savitha (52), her injured husband, who has been admitted to a hospital is Ramachandra, a retired teacher. Both were the residents of Chikkati village in Gundlupet taluk.

Ramachandra, along with Savitha, who had been to Mysuru on their Honda Activa scooter, were returning to their village.

When they were proceeding in front of Prasanna Nanjundeshwara Temple at Chikkayyana Chatra on Mysuru-Ooty Highway, a speeding crane vehicle hit the scooter from behind resulting in Savitha falling on the right side. As soon as Savitha fell, the crane ran over her killing her on the spot while her husband sustained serious injuries and rushed to a hospital.

Meanwhile, the crane driver drove away the vehicle soon after the accident,  Traffic Police said.

Traffic Sub-Inspector Krishnakanth Koli and staff, who rushed to the spot, conducted mahazar and shifted the body of Savitha to Nanjangud General Hospital.

The Sub-Inspector, speaking to SOM, said that the driver of the crane vehicle sped away without stopping and added that investigation is underway and the vehicle will be traced and its driver will be taken into custody soon.

A case has been registered at Nanjangud Traffic Police Station.
