‘Kaladeepti’ Award conferred on Musicians

Mysore/Mysuru: ‘Music gives us mental peace,’ said noted industrialist and art patron Dr. M. Jagannath Shenoy.

He was speaking at 39th anniversary of Thyagaraja Sangeetha Sabha Charitable Trust, Purandaradasa and Thyagaraja Aradhane and felicitation to music achievers at a programme organised at Prasanna Parvathi Kalyana Mantapa in Vontikoppal here recently.

Pointing out that ‘Bhava, Raga, Tala’ are key to music, he said listening to music will drive one to sing. Subsequently, maintaining this urge will lead to raga.

Observing that music makes one to have a peaceful mind, he said that one may lean towards spirituality after having a stint with arts. Stressing on the need for saving and promotion of our rich heritage, he said it is important to teach music to children at homes. Doing so, will help save our culture, he added.

Trust President P. Mohandas Bhat, who presided, said that music gives us happiness. The mind turns towards devotion and becomes ‘Nadamaya’. As such, ‘Nadopasane’ too is important, he pointed out. Noted Musicians M.S. Sheela, Dr. B.N. Manjula, A.V. Dattatreya and K.H. Ravikumar and Vidushi Dr. Geetha Seetharam were conferred ‘Kaladeepti’ Award on the occasion.

Also Flautist Prof. C.A. Sridhar and 8th Cross SPVGMC Trust Secretary C.R. Himamshu, who were bestowed with the prestigious Music Award at Chennai recently, were feted.

Music scholars and Vidushis, accompanied by their disciples, presented ‘Gayana Goshti’ of Thyagaraja Pancharatna Kritis.

Senior Journalist Amshi Prasannakumar, Scholar H.K. Narasimhamurthy, G.S. Ramanujam, Keshava Saralaya, V.S. Ramesh, Pruthvi Bhaskar and others were present. Earlier, a grand procession, with portraits of Purandaradasa and Thyagaraja, was taken out in the streets of Vontikoppal.
