Mysore/Mysuru: Felling of trees in Mysuru, with or without Forest Department approval and the protests that follow have become a recurring issue. Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) has organised its monthly meeting on Apr. 12, at 4 pm to discuss ways to protect the city’s trees.

Several proposed projects could lead to felling of hundreds of trees. In many cases, trees are cut by property owners without permits.

The Karnataka Preservation of Trees Act, 1976, mandates prior approval from the Tree Authority, which in Mysuru needs to be reconstituted.

Deputy Conservator of Forests K. Paramesh will speak on promoting green spaces and the reconstitution of the Tree Authority. Dr. K. N. Amruthesh, Professor, Department of Botany, University of Mysore and Dr. S. Shankar Bhatt, former Professor of Botany, will also participate.

Shantagouda Patil of the Centre for Advanced Learning and Sanjay Dattratri, Convener of MGP’s Tree Census project, will present an update on the census, which is nearing completion.
