Poorvi began learning the basics of classical vocal music at the age of 4 from her mother Shubha Garud. She later began formal training in Hindustani Classical music from Vidu. Vedavathi Gopalaswamy and Pt. Keerthikumar Badasheshi.

In 2006, she started learning from Surmani Dr. Dattatreya L. Velankar, a well-known Hindustani classical vocalist and trained rigorously under him for 16 years.
