Mysuru, June 5 – Elephant attacks continue to haunt villages in Kodagu district. In yet another tragic incident this morning, Sandhya (51), wife of retired IPS officer and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Annalamada Sunil Achayya, was killed in a wild elephant attack at her coffee estate near Thithimathi.
Sandhya was at the estate in Konanakatte, bordering Thithimathi and Anechowkur Range of the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, along with two estate workers. She had arrived in Kodagu from Bengaluru yesterday to attend a family function and visited the plantation this morning.
As Sandhya and the workers entered the estate, a wild elephant suddenly charged at them. On spotting the animal, all three attempted to flee. While the two workers managed to escape with minor injuries, Sandhya was caught in the attack and suffered grievous injuries.
She was immediately rushed to Lopamudra Hospital in Gonikoppal, but succumbed to injuries on the way. Forest officials, including Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Lakshmikanth, Range Forest Officer (RFO) Devaraj and their staff, rushed to the spot and conducted an inspection.
The incident has once again triggered fear among residents of the region, who have urged the Forest Department to take stronger measures to tackle the growing menace of wild elephants. Officials of the Thithimathi Forest Range are gathering further details about the incident.
Sources said Sandhya had travelled to Kodagu from the family’s Bengaluru residence. The family is currently settled in Delhi, while Sunil Achayya is posted in Geneva on a Central Government assignment.
