Thousands run in Dasara Half-Marathon

Mysuru:  As part of Dasara, the Youth Empowerment and Sports Department,  Sports Authority of Karnataka and Dasara Sports Sub-Committee had organised a Half-Marathon this morning at University Oval Grounds here.

Along with Half-Marathon (21.1-km), the event also featured 10-km run for men, 6-km run for women and 3-km run for high school boys and girls. Totally about 3,000 people from all age groups participated.

The Half-Marathon was flagged off by National Basket Ball player P.U. Navaneetha.

Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep, who flagged off the 10-km run, also took part in the event and completed the run. International Sports-person Reena George was also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Randeep said that winning or losing should be taken equally in sports. He added that the venue for sports was shifted from Chamundi Vihar Stadium to Oval Grounds as  the latter was situated in the heart of the city.

Music was played and sports persons performed aerobic dances to DJ music at the venue.

Results: Govind Singh of MRC, Ooty, won the first place in the Half-Marathon for men and took home a cash prize of Rs. 30,000. Pravesh (Bengaluru) finished second (Rs. 25,000), Nagesh Pawar (Bijapur) finished third (Rs. 20,000) and Praveen Khambai of Bengaluru secured the fourth place (Rs. 15,000). Kalapudihari (MRC, Ooty) finished fifth (Rs.10,000).

Women’s section: Akshitha of Davanagere won the first place (Rs. 30,000), followed by Mamatha (B’luru-Rs. 25,000) and T. Kavana (Excellent SC, Mysuru-Rs.20,000). Ashwini (Excellent SC, Mysuru-Rs.15,000) finished fourth while K. Meghana (Gadag-Rs.10,000) finished fifth.

10-km race for men: Mahakuteshwar (Badami) won the first place, followed by G.J. Chethan (Mysuru), Mahesh Patil (Belagavi), Mohit Saini (Bengaluru) and C. Sandeep (Bengaluru).

6-km race for women: Sapna Patil of Bengaluru won the title. Chaitra Devadiga (Bengaluru) secured the second place while Mysuru’s Thippavva Sannakki secured the third place. P.C. Sakkubai of Belagavi finished fourth and L.D. Priya of Mysuru secured the fifth place.

3-km race for boys: S.R. Rahul of C.K. Puttaswamy School, Mysuru, secured the first place. H.S. Hemanth of K.R. Nagar secured the second place and R.D. Vittal of Alvas finished third. M. Chandrashekar of Begur finished fourth and Lokesh of Kodagu secured the fifth place.

3-km run for girls: Malashree of Alvas secured the first place, followed by Rashi of DYSS, Kudige. Chaitra of Kurubur finished third. Monika and Mounashree (both from Kurbur) secured the fourth and fifth respectively.

All the participants were  given T-shirts, medals and certificates. Breakfast was also arranged by the organisers to all the participants. Prizes will be distributed at the valedictory of Dasara Sports at Chamundi Vihar this evening.
