Manipal Hospital sets new benchmark 

Mysuru: Dr. Jayanth Reddy, Lead Consultant – HPB & Liver and Pancreatic Transplant, Manipal Hospital on Old Airport Road, Bengaluru and Manipal Hospital, Mysuru, said, “Every liver transplant is unique, requiring careful evaluation of recipient and donor while addressing complexities associated with advanced liver disease.” 

Addressing media at Pathrakarthara Bhavan in city recently to highlight successful establishment of Liver Transplant Programme and recent Clinical Outcomes at Manipal Institute of Gastro Sciences Unit, he said, “These initial transplants reflect the strength of a coordinated multidisciplinary transplant programme, enabling patients in and around Mysuru to receive advanced liver transplant care closer to home.”  

He also highlighted three consecutive Deceased Donor Liver Transplants (DDLT) successfully performed by the Unit within a single month, from mid May to mid June 2026.  

Dr. P.N. Nagesh, Lead Consultant – Multi-Organ Transplant – Anaesthesia said, “Safe anaesthesia, precise intra-operative monitoring and seamless coordination among the transplant team are critical to ensuring best possible outcomes. Every step is focused on providing patients with the safest path to recovery and long-term health.”  

The doctors also shared the case of 61-year-old Jairam P. Sampath, a resident of Mysuru, who was diagnosed with decompensated cirrhosis secondary to Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC). Following a sudden worsening of jaundice, he underwent a successful liver transplant and recovered well, allowing him to return to his normal daily activities within weeks.  

Explaining the case of 46-year-old patient Prasad (name changed), it was shared that he was diagnosed with Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure (ACLF) and his condition rapidly deteriorated due to severe liver dysfunction. Following stabilisation and a successful liver transplant, he made an excellent recovery and was discharged in a stable condition. The third patient, who underwent transplantation on June 13, continues to recover satisfactorily.

Dr. A.K. Satheesh Rao, Senior Consultant – Medical Gastroenterology & Hepatology said, “Regular monitoring, appropriate medical management and identifying the right time for transplantation can significantly enhance survival and quality of life.”  

Dr. H. Vasudev Pai, Senior Consultant – Surgical Gastroenterology & HPB Surgeon, emphasised liver transplantation as a highly specialised procedure that requires careful patient selection, meticulous surgical planning and a coordinated multidisciplinary approach.   

Liver transplant programme is supported by a multidisciplinary transplant team that includes Dr. P.K. Balasubramanyam, Dr. V. Manjunath, Dr. Gnanavelu Gurupal, Dr. Nischal Molkeri, Dr. Shruti Reddy, Dr. Deepti Ramachandra, Dr. Amit Sreekanth, Dr. Rakesh Reddy and Dr. Sandeep Satsangi.
