Ornaments, cash worth Rs. 5.91 lakh stolen

Mysuru: Burglars, who broke into the sanctum sanctorum of Chamundeshwari Temple at Chamundeshwari Railway Layout in Mysuru city have  decamped with gold, silver ornaments and case,  all valued at Rs. 5.91 lakh. A case has been registered at Metagalli Police Station.

According to the complaint, temple’s chief priest H. Balakrishna had adorned the deity with gold ornaments and performed special rituals on Aug. 4 as part of Chamundeshwari Vardhanti.

At around 10.15 pm, he locked the sanctum sanctorum and the temple gates. When the priest returned at about 9.45 am on Aug. 5, he found the main gate lock intact. However, after entering the premises, he noticed that the iron grill in front of the sanctum sanctorum had been opened. The temple hundi was missing and the sanctum sanctorum door was forced open.

The burglars had allegedly stolen two gold taalis (pendants), a gold chain, a silver Ganapati mask, silver serpent ornaments, silver feet and Rs. 10,000 in cash which were placed before the deity. The stolen property is valued at Rs. 5.91 lakh.

Following the incident, the priest lodged a complaint with Metagalli Police, who have registered a case.
