MCC spends Rs. 20 lakh for walkers, children to play, relax and unwind

Mysuru: To help people unwind amid the pressures of daily life, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is trying out a novel initiative by installing outdoor musical instruments at Cheluvamba Park, opposite Akashvani in Yadavagiri, at an estimated cost of Rs. 20 lakh. 

The initiative is aimed at giving visitors, both young and old, an opportunity to play the instruments and enjoy some relaxing moments in the park’s pleasant surroundings. Spread over nine acres, Cheluvamba Park is a popular destination for morning walkers and those taking an evening stroll. The well-maintained garden, walking paths, topiary, flowering plants and sprawling green           lawns add to its appeal. 

Instruments for all 

As part of the initiative, instruments such as a large Rainbow Xylophone, Tubular Bells, Conga Goblet Drum Set, Butterfly/ Leaf Music Panel, Talking Tube, Sound Pipes, Stepping Stone Tone and Harmony Music Arch  are being installed. 

The musical sounds produced by the instruments are expected to create a soothing atmosphere and provide visitors with an opportunity to relax and de-stress  while spending time amid nature. 

Works to be completed in two months 

MCC Horticulture Wing Assistant Engineer (AE) H.N. Chetan told Star of Mysore that the installation work is expected to be completed in about two months, following which the facility will be opened to the public. 

Arrangements are being made to ensure that only one person uses an instrument at a time. The area will also be monitored through CCTV cameras to prevent theft and damage to the equipment, he said. 

MCC Commissioner M.K. Savitha said that the musical equipment would be installed without causing inconvenience to visitors. If the initiative proves successful, the MCC will consider replicating it in other parks across the city, she said. 

She added that the facility could also kindle an interest in music among children while helping them relax and reduce stress. 

Located along the Mysuru-KRS Road, Cheluvamba Park is one of the prominent and well-maintained parks under the MCC. It has a nursery, yoga mantap, musical fountain, walking paths and several tall trees, making it a popular recreational space in the city.
