Mysuru: The parents of a 19-year-old youth, who was declared brain dead by doctors at a private hospital in Mysuru, have donated his organs, giving hope to patients awaiting transplants.

Bharath Kumar, the only son of Shivamadu and Lakshmamma of Moodalahundi village in the district, was a fruit trader.

On Sept. 8, Bharath was riding his motorcycle (KA-09-JP-2340) from Mysuru towards his village. When he reached near Tanthigulla on Mysuru-Bannur Road, a KSRTC bus (KA-11-F-0452), coming from Malavalli, hit his bike while negotiating a curve.

Bharath suffered serious head injuries and was admitted to a private hospital in Mysuru by passersby. He was shifted to the ICU and continued to be treated, but did not respond to treatment.

Doctors informed his parents on the first day that he was brain dead, while continuing treatment in the hope that his condition would improve. As there was no change in his condition, doctors counselled the parents about organ donation and explained that his organs could help patients awaiting transplants.

Bharath’s parents consented to the donation and his organs were harvested yesterday. Following the procedure, his body was shifted to the mortuary at Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI), where post-mortem was conducted and the body was handed over to the family. Last rites were performed on the family’s agricultural land yesterday in the presence of relatives, friends and villagers.

A case has been registered at Aarakere Police Station.
