Farmers protest neglect of Hallikar breed cows

October 18, 2026

Mysuru: Farmers staged a snap protest near Kukkarahalli Circle in the city yesterday, alleging that the District Administration had neglected Hallikar cows while providing facilities for the Kambala buffaloes.

The farmers alleged that basic amenities were lacking at the ground near Mahabodhi Satva Hostel, where the Hallikar Cow Exhibition is being held. They said that even drinking water for the cows and basic toilet facilities for farmers had not been arranged.

Angered by the neglect, the farmers staged a rasta roko along with their cows, bringing traffic to a halt.

Police personnel arrived at the spot and tried to pacify the protesters, assuring them that the matter would be brought to the notice of the District Administration. However, the farmers continued their protest, demanding that officials visit the spot.

“The authorities are spending Rs. 8 crore on Kambala buffaloes and providing good facilities, besides an incentive of Rs. 60,000 for each buffalo. However, our cows are being given borewell or lake water, which Hallikar cows do not consume. They need river water. We are not demanding fodder for our cows, but we expect clean drinking water,” the protesters said.

Department of Animal Husbandry Deputy Director Siddaramu, who arrived at the spot, assured the farmers that he would discuss the issue with the District Administration. The farmers subsequently withdrew their protest. They warned that they would intensify the agitation if their demands were not met.
