Bidadi bovine yields 44.2 litres of milk; walks away with first prize of Rs. 1 lakh

Mysuru: Ashwini Ambarish of Bidadi in Bengaluru Rural district won the first prize in Karnataka State-level Milking Competition held as part of Raitha Dasara-2026 at J.K. Grounds yesterday, with her Holstein Friesian (H.F.) cow yielding 44.200 litres of milk in a day. The event was organised by Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Dept. and Mysuru District Gopalakara Sangha. Ashwini’s cow yielded 23.300 litres in the morning and 20.900 litres in the evening, earning her the first prize of Rs. 1 lakh.

Sri Gururaghavendra Dairy Farm of Saligrama secured the second prize with a yield of 42.400 litres and won Rs. 80,000. Ravi S. Bin Sanjeevaraju of Bengaluru stood third with 41.750 litres, receiving Rs. 60,000, while Kiran Gowda of Channarayapatna in Hassan took the fourth prize with 40.550 litres and won Rs. 40,000.

The competition began with trial rounds on Oct. 16 and 18 cows made it to the final round. For the first time, milking machines were used. Cows yielding more than 25 litres of milk a day were also given an incentive of Rs. 10,000 each.

Temporary sheds were set up for the cattle, with individual fans to keep them cool. Soft coconut coir mats were laid on the floors to prevent strain on the animals.

Their diet included rice flour, husk, bran, cattle feed, fresh and dry grass, maize gruel, millet porridge and fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, carrots, beetroot and radish, along with sugarcane juice. However, the event also saw some discontent among farmers. They alleged that while buffaloes brought from Mangaluru for Kambala were given special facilities & incentives, no suc harrangements were made for their cattle.
