Kondapalli’s ‘Ambari Bomma’ displayed at AnSI in city

November 7, 2026

Mysuru: The Zonal Anthropological Museum (ZAM), Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI), Southern Regional Centre, Mysuru, has opened the November edition of its monthly exhibition series ‘Object Speaks’, featuring ‘Ambari Bomma,’ a traditional wooden elephant toy from Kondapalli in Andhra Pradesh.

The artefact depicts a decorated elephant carrying an ornamental Ambari (howdah), with human figures seated inside. It reflects the historical association of elephants with royal ceremonies, processions and festive traditions. The exhibition traces the nearly 400-year-old Kondapalli toy-making tradition practised by the Aryakshatriya community, also known as Nakarshalu or Chitrakaras.

It showcases the craftsmanship involved in making these toys using lightweight Tella Poniki wood, intricate carving, natural adhesives and colourful hand-painted details.

Kondapalli toys offer miniature representations of Indian society, depicting mythology, occupations, rural life and community traditions. They also form an important part of festive celebrations, particularly ‘Bommala Koluvu’ during Navaratri in Andhra Pradesh and Gombe Habba in Karnataka.

The exhibition was inaugurated recently in the presence of chief guest R.G. Singh, Founder of Kaladevi Toy Museum and Ramsingh Museum of Mysore Paintings, and guest of honour H.S. Dharmendra, art historian, designer and curator. Dr. Mithun Sikdar, Head of Office, AnSI, Southern Regional Centre, was also present.

On the occasion, R.G. Singh delivered a lecture on the history of traditional toys and Karnataka’s rich craft heritage. Curated by Dr. Banita Behera, K. Sagar and Kanike Veerashekar, the exhibition will remain open to the public for one month.
