A rare alumni meet at a school where silence spoke volumes

December 15, 2019

Mysuru: It was a rare alumni meet at a school in city this morning where silence literally spoke volumes.

About 300 old students of the Government School for Deaf and Dumb had assembled at the School premises in Tilaknagar here for the Alumni Meet and Guruvandana programme organised by the Alumni Association of the School.

The 300 alumni, all deaf and dumb, exchanged pleasantries enthusiastically using only the sign language many of whom have either retired or serving at leading companies and organisations. They had come from far off places like Dharwad, Belgaum and Bidar.

Speaking on the occasion, School Head P. Gangadhar recalled that the school opened in 1901 was the only Government School for Deaf and Dumb in the State and over the years he observed that many private schools of that type have come up in the State. He said that a WhatsApp group was formed with the alumni of the School as members and texted about today’s event which proved a grand success.

The alumni offered Guruvandana to retired School Superintendent M. Channeshaiah, retired teachers Nanjamma, R. Ramegowda and retired CEO of Mysore Medical College Puttaswamy. District Welfare Officer for Disabled Mamatha, School Superintendent Harish, Alumni Association Vice-President G.S. Naveen Kumar, Treasurer S.T. Mahesh, Secretary Harish and others were present.
