A unique musical tribute to Mysore Vasudevacharya

March 27, 2018

Sir,

At the stroke of 5.45 pm, the chorus in Karnatak music under the leadership of Vidu. Dr. Sukanya Prabhakar started vibrating at the residence of celebratory Mysore Vasudevacharya near Agrahara Circle, Mysuru.

Vidu. Dr. Sukanya Prabhakar rightly chooses to celebrate International Women’s Day on Mar.8 with the help of her disciples. She selected an old residence of Mysore Vasudevacharya which is in a dilapidated condition near Agarahara Circle, Mysuru, for this event.

The house, being not used for residence, was in a bad condition. The place was cleaned by the volunteers Geetha Putty and Yadupati Putty. There was no electric connection. The students of Surabhi Gana Kala Mandira successfully used torch to look into the script while singing Vasudevacharya’s Kruthis.

The first song of the programme was Sri Ramachandra Sugunachandra in Raga Hindola followed by Palayeshu Padmanabha in Hamsa dwani, Pahi Krishna in Behag and so on by the students.

Besides this, Dr. Sukanya Prabhakar herself sang Narayana in Udaya Ravi Chandrika, Rama Ramana and Govindam bhaje. C.S. Sridhar accompanied on mridanga.

At the end, the entire team sang thillana in Raga Charukeshi. It is interesting to note that all these songs were composed by Vasudevacharya. It was a tribute to Sri Vasudevacharya.

The effort made by Dr. Sukanya Prabhakar in organising the programme was commendable. The artiste made this event successful with the help of her disciples of whom most of them were senior citizens.

In the days to come, I wish, the venue is utilised by other music Centres or Sabhas in memory of Sri Vasudevacharya who dedicated his life for the cause of Karnatak music. The Kannada and Culture Department should also make efforts to see that this monumental piece is preserved as a heritage monument.
