Mysuru: Bowing to public sentiment, Forest Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy has directed the Forest Department to accord a befitting farewell to ‘Combing Star’ Abhimanyu, who has carried the Golden Howdah six times.

The 2026 Dasara will be Abhimanyu’s final appearance and the celebrated elephant will serve as the Nishane Aane in the Vijayadashami procession (Jumboo Savari) on Oct. 21.

Abhimanyu was earlier accorded a send-off before the Gajapayana began at Veeranahosahalli and was subsequently sent to Mathigodu Elephant Camp. The decision drew strong protests from his fans, who termed it an insult to the elephant and his years of loyal service.

Campaigns and protests followed, with fans demanding that Abhimanyu be given the Nishane Aane role, in keeping with the tradition of according the last honour to the Howdah Elephant.

In a letter issued yesterday, the Minister highlighted Abhimanyu’s distinguished service. With the elephant nearing the retirement age of 60, Reddy directed officials to ensure that he is accorded due respect and recognition during this year’s Dasara.

The Minister also stressed the importance of honouring tradition and directed the Forest Department to make suitable arrangements for Abhimanyu to take part as the Nishane Aane.

Protest in Mysuru yesterday

Demanding a traditional farewell for Abhimanyu in Mysuru, the Gandhada Gudi Foundation took out a protest march in the city yesterday.

The protesters, who assembled at Ballal Circle (Ashoka Circle), marched to Aranya Bhavan in Ashokapuram, demanding that Abhimanyu be made the Nishane Aane for this year’s Jumboo Savari as a mark of respect and in keeping with tradition.

Foundation State President Aryan, Satish, Meghan Raj and others took part in the protest.
