Abhimanyu’s Dasara feat ends without farewell..!

August 19, 2026

Did damaged tusk seal the fate of six-time Golden Howdah carrier?

Mysuru: Forest officials have come under criticism for not according a ceremonial farewell to Abhimanyu, who has been dropped from this year’s Dasara elephant squad.

Traditionally, elephants that have carried the Golden Howdah during the Dasara procession are honoured upon retirement by being brought to the front of the Jumboo  Savari procession on Vijayadashami day as the lead ‘Nishane’ elephant, as a mark of respect and gratitude. The tradition was followed when Drona retired, followed by Balarama and later Arjuna. Each was given a dignified send-off during the procession.

However, despite Abhimanyu carrying the Golden Howdah for six consecutive years from 2020 with remarkable success, he has not been included in this year’s squad, drawing public criticism.

The question of whether a damaged tusk led to his exclusion has also surfaced. Six months ago, while at Mathigodu Elephant Camp in Kodagu district, Abhimanyu accidentally struck a tree, causing a slight fracture to one of his tusks. Some observers believe the injury may have influenced the decision to leave him out of the squad.

Abhimanyu, now 59 and entering his 60th year, was expected to carry the Ambari for the final time this season, as officials had indicated last year. However, senior authorities have reportedly decided against entrusting him with the responsibility.

Sources said, influential voices had pressured the Department to drop Abhimanyu, arguing that it would be inappropriate to place the Golden Howdah on an elephant with a damaged tusk.
