Academia-Industry interaction crucial for knowledge generation: IISc. Director at NIE

August 20, 2017

Mysuru: “Academia-Industry interaction is vital for generation of new knowledge and ideas,” observed Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bengaluru, Director Prof. Anurag Kumar.

Delivering the 7th Graduation Day address at the National Institute of Engineering (NIE) at NIE Diamond Jubilee Sports Complex on Manandavadi road here yesterday, he said that the achievements of students are a reflection of their dedication, perseverance and pursuit of excellence.

Pointing out that young engineers are often enamoured with high technology, Prof. Anurag Kumar said although this excitement and desire among young engineers to begin their careers with the latest technologies was natural and expected, they should also very much remember that the society needs many mundane solutions as well — clean water, renewable energy, inexpensive water sanitation, affordable medical diagnostics, electricity and education for all.

“Young engineers often believe that their only concern needs to be technology. However as an engineer, you will need to work with other people and must always keep in mind that technology has a social context too,” he said as a word of advise to the students.

He noted that as an engineer gains experience, he / she has to learn to be a good collaborator, to respect others’ contributions and also be a responsible contributor himself / herself.

Calling upon the students to keep reading and updating their knowledge, he highlighted that academia and industry can play a contemporary role in exploiting new knowledge and research to create innovations that lead to new products and services.

Asha Prakash, Operations Director, HCL Technology Ltd., Bengaluru, was the guest of honour. NIE President Srinath Batni presided. NIE Principal Prof. Ravi, Controller of Examinations Prof. T.N. Sridhar, Dean- Academic Affairs Prof. G.S. Suresh and others were present.  A total of 890 students (672 under graduates, 152 M.Tech and 66 MCA) were awarded degrees on the occasion.
