Mysuru, Oct. 5- The Mysore Centre of the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India) — ACCE(I) — in association with The Ramco Cements Limited, celebrated Engineers’ Day recently at Sri Kanteerava Narasimharaja Sports Club, Lalitha Mahal Road, Mysuru.

On the occasion, chief guest B.S.C. Rao, former President of ACCE(I), felicitated two eminent Civil Engineers — Dr. Ramalingaiah, retired Principal, PES College of Engineering, Mandya, with ‘Teacher par Excellence Award’ and H.K. Sampath Kumar, retired Executive Engineer, Karnataka Irrigation Department, with the title ‘Civil Engineer Extraordinaire.’

Both Ramalingaiah and Sampath Kumar paid tribute to their seniors and expressed gratitude to their colleagues for the support they had received throughout their careers.

The former recalled an incident involving Dr. S. Radhakrishnan during his tenure as India’s Ambassador to the USSR. When he requested for an appointment to meet Stalin, the Soviet leader unusually scheduled the meeting for midnight. Radhakrishnan, however, politely declined, citing that hour as his time for rest. Stalin was reportedly taken aback by the Ambassador’s response.

As a result, the meeting was rescheduled and took place on another day at a convenient time.

Chief guest Rao, while complimenting the awardees, paid tributes to Sir MV and Radhakrishnan, and shared fascinating incidents related to them.

He recalled that during a visit to a steel factory in the United States, Sir M. Visvesvaraya, at the advanced age of 75, demonstrated his intense curiosity to learn by climbing a 75-foot ladder to understand a machine’s inner workings. His action inspired a few of his colleagues, present there, to follow him.

While Suraj Kumar, Dy. General Manager (Technical Services) of Ramco Cements, briefed about his company, Anil Kumar Pillai, Assistant Vice-President (Technical Services), gave a presentation of their latest range of products, under the brand name HARDWORKER.

In his Presidential address, ACCE(I) Mysore Chairman S.B. Basavaraj shared his experience of visiting Sir MV Memorial and Museum at Muddenahalli on the occasion of Sir MV’s birthday (Sept. 15). He spoke highly of the Museum and its exhibits, appreciating how they honour the legacy of the great engineer and statesman.
