After decades, Cholera case resurfaces in Mysuru

52-year-old woman treated for pandemic at K.R. Hospital; discharged after recovery

Mysore/Mysuru: Cholera, the pandemic disease that had been totally eradicated in the district including city has resurfaced after a gap of several years. A case of cholera was reported in the city recently and the patient was successfully treated and discharged from the hospital upon recovery.

A 52-year-old woman from a locality coming under Narasimharaja (NR) Assembly Constituency had been suffering from acute stomach ache and diarrhoea. Upon her admission to K.R. Hospital, the symptoms of cholera was confirmed and was treated as an inpatient, till she was discharged from the hospital three days ago.

As the woman appeared weak, she was treated for malnutrition. Following the stool test at laboratory, she was confirmed to be infected by cholera and was shifted to a separate bed for treatment that lasted a week. Following the treatment, she was subjected to another round of tests and was confirmed to have been cured of the disease, before discharging her, said a doctor.

Following the scorching sun, unhygiene and consumption of contaminated food and water, the pandemic is likely to spread among the people. After a gap of several years, Cholera case was reported for the first time in Mysuru and the patient has been successfully treated, the doctor added.

The matter has been also brought to the notice of Deputy Commissioner and District Health Officer (DHO).

That apart, eight people suffering from diarrhoea had been admitted to the hospital, but didn’t show any symptoms of cholera. They have been discharged from the hospital after treatment, the doctor said.
