All consumer products to have labels on regional language soon: Dist. Judge

March 18, 2019

Mysuru:  Principal District and Sessions Court Judge Suresh K. Vontigodi said that all consumer goods and products sold in the country, irrespective of where they have been manufactured, will soon have labels and instructions in Hindi and another regional language.

He was speaking after inaugurating one- day legal awareness programme for law students organised jointly by District Legal Services Authority, District Bar Association and JSS Law College as part of World Consumers Day in city on Friday.

He said that India is a land of many languages and dialects and Hindi is the official language and a sizeable population speaks Hindi while the rest are comfortable in their regional language. Though English is spoken in the metros and is the recognised official language, a majority of the Indian population do not speak the language. Hence providing instructions in local languages on all consumer products helps to reach all people across the nation, he added.

The Judge remembered the contributions of United States of America’s President John F. Kennedy who first initiated to sensitise people on consumer rights and heralded the celebrations of Consumers Day since Mar. 15, 1962.

District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) Member Secretary and Senior Civil Judge B.P. Devamane wanted all citizens to learn the preamble of the Constitution. Underprivileged community people, women and labourers can avail free legal service through DLSA, he said.

He also appreciated the role of social engineers in the reconstruction of the society besides finding remedies for various social evils, inequality, practise of discrimination and other defects in the country.  Advocate B.S. Prashanth gave a special lecture on Consumer Rights. CEO of the College Prof. K.S. Suresh, Principal S. Nataraj, District Bar Association President S. Anandkumar and others were present.
