All-India Inter-University Women’s Cricket: Punjab’s Lovely Professional University bags Championship

Mysore/Mysuru: Punjab’s Lovely Professional University emerged Champions in the All India Inter-University Cricket Tournament for Women 2022-23 organised by JSS Science and Technology University (JSS STU) and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) at JSS KSCA Cricket Grounds in city, by defeating Maharshi Dayanand (MD) University, Rohtak, Haryana, by four wickets in the finals held yesterday.

MD University was put to bat after Lovely Professional University won the toss. MD University scored 126 runs in 25 overs losing all the 10 wickets while the Lovely Professional University reached the target of 127 runs in 24.1 overs with a loss of 6 wickets.

Nagma and Deepa Kumari of Lovely Professional University scored 65 runs and 25 runs respectively while Bhavana and Tanu of MD University scored 55 runs and 18 runs respectively, thus becoming the highest scorers in the finals.

Sonal and Shivani Jangidh of Lovely Professional University took three wickets (17 runs) and two wickets (24 runs) respectively and Suman Guliya of MD University managed to take only one wicket (24 runs).

Third Place to Guru Nanak Dev University

Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, Punjab, which played against Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, for third place won by three wickets. Savitribai Phule Pune University, which won the toss, chose to bat scored 159 runs in 25 overs losing three wickets.

Eshwari Savarkar and Priyanka were the highest scorers with 54 runs and 57 runs respectively and Priyank Mutreya took 1 wicket (31 runs) for Ghodake Ajeya of Savitribai Phule Pune University.

Guru Nanak Dev University scored 161 runs in 24 overs for 7 wickets, thus securing the                    third place.

Prize distribution

Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Mysuru Zone Head S. Balachandar distributed prizes for the winning teams at a stage programme which was held later at JSS STU Seminar Hall.

Speaking on the occasion, Balachandar said that it has been 50 years since women cricket has begun in the country and over the time, necessary support and opportunities have been provided. “Using these opportunities, women must get recognition at the national and international level and reach heights without losing hope,” he added.

KSCA Mysuru Zone Convenor Harikrishna Kumar, JSS STU Vice-Chancellor Dr. A.N. Santhosh Kumar, Registrar Dr. S.A. Dhanraj, Physical Education Department Head Dr. C. Revanna and others were present.
