Alleged harassment by daughter-in-law: Man commits suicide after writing death note on road

Mandya: A man, depressed over the harassment meted out by his daughter-in-law, committed suicide by hanging self to a tree after writing the reason for his death on the road in Kiragasoru village in Malavalli taluk yesterday.

The deceased is Mariswamy (60), of Kiragasoru village.

Mariswamy’s son  Shivaraju had married advocate Hema of Bengaluru about four years ago, but Hema, who did not lead a family life with Shivaraju even for a month, left her husband’s house after a fight and began to stay with her parents. As Hema did not return from her parents’ house even after four years, Mariswamy got his son married again, it is learnt.

Meanwhile, Hema, who learnt about the second marriage, came to the village, questioned Mariswamy about getting his son married for the second time without obtaining divorce and allegedly demanded Rs. 15 lakh as compensation. Hema is said to have threatened Mariswamy of sending him to jail.

On Wednesday, Hema, who came to the village along with some of her relatives, fought with her husband and father-in-law for money and left the place. Depressed over this, Mariswamy went to Belakawadi Police Station to file a complaint against Hema, but the Police, who did not receive the complaint sent Mariswamy back, it is learnt.

Depressed over the indifferent attitude of his daughter-in-law and the Police, Mariswamy, yesterday wrote a death note on the road in the village accusing his daughter-in-law and her relatives responsible for his death and to bring MLA Annadani to the village and provide justice.

He then kept the Police complaint which he had brought to give the Police, little money and offered puja by applying kumkum and turmeric to the complaint and hung himself to the tree nearby. Passers-by, who saw Mariswamy hanging from the tree, informed the Police.
