Anna Hazare to launch agitation for Lokpal soon

October 10, 2017

Pune: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s failure to appoint a Lokpal even three years after assuming office has upset anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare. He has resolved to launch an agitation in protest against the PM breaking his promise.

He made this announcement at the conclusion of a two-day meeting of his supporters at his native Ralegan Siddhi in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. He said that his agitation would begin by end of January or in early February in New Delhi.

Hazare, 80, said that this agitation had become imperative to make India corruption-free. However, this agitation was not targeted at any individual or party, but against the dismal state of affairs in the country. On Oct. 2, he had criticised the Prime Minister and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his former protégé, while visiting Raj Ghat in New Delhi to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi.

In the last one year, Hazare has shot off letter after letter to the Prime Minister but to no avail. Hence, he has criticised Modi for failing to respond to his earlier letters and accused his Government of cheating the people by making hollow promises. “Mr. Modi had promised voters that he would deposit Rs.15 lakh in every Indian’s account by bringing back black money from abroad. But there is no word on black money or the Lokpal,” he said.
