Are we citizens really civilised?

January 21, 2026

Sir,

During my recent visit to Mysuru, my hometown, I witnessed uncivilised behaviour from the so-called civilised people who live in our vicinity and are highly literate, by throwing garbage bags in the corner of a road where the wall is beautifully painted with the words: “To maintain cleanliness and not to throw garbage.”

I waited for hours one fine morning to find out, “who does it” — maybe kids or teenagers throwing it, ignoring signboards — but to my wonder, people in their 40s to 60s arrived at the spot in cars and scooters to dump these garbage bags and disappear regularly.

How to enforce cleanliness? How to educate the most educated people? How to civilise the civilised people?

There is a daily door-to-door garbage collection system in place by Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), and yes, some days they miss due to the breakdown of a vehicle or other reasons.

We, concerned citizens, need to curb such a menace by enforcing fines before we turn our beautiful city into a garbage city with heaps of garbage in every corner. I hope our MCC Commissioner will address the issue and create a helpline to report such complaints for its citizens who will help them to keep the city clean. Also, such toll-free numbers should be displayed in several spots to report such violations.
