May 29, 2018

Mysuru:  The Principal District and Sessions Court has sentenced a man to five years jail and a fine of Rs.10,000 for attempting to kill his first wife with a machete and also assaulting a relative who came to stop him.

The accused has been identified as Mahadev, a resident of Kaalenahalli in K.R. Nagar. Mahadev had attempted to kill his wife Puttagowri and assaulted his relative Swamygowda when he had gone to a function at his relative’s place in Mullur village. Mahadev, who had not divorced his first wife Puttagowri, had married another woman. Depressed over this, Puttagowri approached a Court seeking alimony and the Court had ruled in her favour ordering Mahadev to pay following which the relatives sought Rs. 25,000 from Mahadev and gave it to Puttagowri.

On March 13, 2013, Mahadev had gone to Mullur to attended a function where he saw Puttagowri along with Swamygowda and other relatives. Mahadev, in a fit of rage, picked up a machete and assaulted Puttagowri. Swamygowda, who went to the rescue, was also assaulted on the face and head. Puttagowri, who was severely injured, was admitted to the Emergency Ward at K.R. Nagar General Hospital. Mahadev, on learning that his first wife, has been admitted to K.R. Nagar Hospital, reached the hospital, hit Puttagowri with a glass bottle and stabbed her with the broken bottle many times.

Following the incident, Swamygowda had filed a complaint with the K.R. Nagar Police. The Police, based on the complaint, registered a case and investigated the issue. They later submitted a charge-sheet against Mahadev to the Court.

Principal District and Sessions Court Judge Suresh Vontigodi, who hear the arguments, found Mahadev guilty of the crime and sentenced him. Public Prosecutor T.B. Lakshmidevi argued on behalf of the Government.
