Mysuru: World Consumer Day to create global awareness about Consumer Rights was celebrated in city this morning.

The Members of Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP), Department of Legal Metrology, Bharath Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), CESC, Mysore Jewellers and Saraf Association, MYMUL and other organisations have set up kiosks near Chikka Gadiyara (Dufferin Clock Tower) and provided information about the protection of consumer rights undertaken by Departments, Agencies and Corporation.

MGP President H. Srimathi Hariprasad, Working President Sobana, members Janaki Ramani, Jayaram, Dr. Krishnamurthy and Yaduraj highlighted the importance of consumer rights.

They said that consumer have all rights to have information about the quality, potency, quantity, purity, price and standard of goods or services of all the products.  

They also advocated about  consumers right to choose the product be protected from all kind of hazardous substances besides to seek redressal, whenever consumer rights have been infringed and the right to complete consumer education.   

Over a dozen students of MSc Chemistry Department from St. Philomena’s College gave a demonstration on how customers are cheated by traders by supplying adulterated products and sensitised them on various health effects caused by consuming adulterated food items.  They also displayed the adulterated coffee, tea powder, sweets and other products on the occasion.

Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology Department B. Thimmarayappa, Inspectors Mahadevaswamy and Sumarani also gave demonstration about how the public are cheated in weight and measurement by traders. They asked the public to check and the weight and measurement of their products before leaving the shops. Mysore Chamarajanagar Milk Union Limited Technical Officer also sensitised the public about the adulteration of milk products.

CESC Assistant Executive Engineer Rajappa and other officials educated the public by appealing them to file complaints by utilising the helpline number 1912 in case of power disruptions and irregular power cuts occurs in their vicinity.
