Ayushman Bharat Scheme for Kidney Transplantation: 15 BPL patients undergo surgery at Sigma Hospital

Mysore/Mysuru: A 34-year-old male farmer from K.R. Pet Taluk underwent a kidney transplant on Sept. 27 at Sigma Hospital in Kuvempunagar, Mysuru, in which his wife donated her one kidney.

Post-surgery, patient is now doing well and able to do all his routine activities without worrying about need for dialysis and dietary restrictions. With this transplant, Sigma Hospital’s Nephro-Urology Department completes 35 kidney transplants in last 3 years with patients from Mysuru and neighbouring districts.

The kidney transplant team consisted of Dr. K.M. Madappa, Consultant Urologist and Kidney Transplant Surgeon. A pioneer of kidney transplant in Mysuru having performed the first transplant of Mysuru district, he has the experience of 350 kidney transplants till date.

Dr. D.N. Somanna, Consultant Urologist and Kidney Transplant Surgeon with 7 years’ experience; Dr Aniketh Prabhakar, Consultant Nephrologist, Kidney Transplant Specialist and lead Nephrologist.

Addressing a press meet at the Hospital premises in city yesterday, Dr. K.M. Madappa said that the Hospital offers affordable and high-quality services for patients seeking kidney transplants.

Sigma Hospital is also recognised by Arogya Karnataka Ayushman Bharat Scheme and the only hospital in Mysuru actively offering kidney transplant services under this Scheme, he said.

Till now 15 patients have benefitted from this scheme for BPL card holders and it includes surgery for kidney recipients and their medications completely free of cost.

The Hospital even runs a Deceased Donor (Brain Dead) transplant programme which is highly affordable and operates with Jeevasarthakate programme of Government of Karnataka and considers transfer of registrations from other hospitals. Sigma Hospital has also performed 6 successful kidney transplants with donor and recipient having mismatched blood groups and with the help of advanced techniques. A different blood group is no longer a barrier for kidney transplant, the doctors claimed. Sigma Hospital specialises in Laparoscopic donor surgeries which is one-of-a-kind in Mysuru. It ensures faster recovery, reduced pain and minimal scar on abdomen.
