Bad roads in India maim and kill several unfortunate persons every day. Badly planned and potholed roads reflect the indifference and casual negligent attitude of the authorities who are in-charge of maintaining them. Less said the better of the condition of roads in rainy season.
If you complain about a bad road in your street or in the extension you live, it takes several months and even years to get the road repaired.
Also, there is no new thinking to sort out and find solutions to problems. The sense of urgency is never there. If things have to improve, the Government needs to uproot archaic rules and methods of functioning. But the rigmarole continues.
And as the MCC and MUDA are not sued for millions (like in the Western countries) for loss of limb or life because of bad roads and accidents, they remain irresponsible. Life is very cheap here!
Is it possible for the Mysuru City Corporation to create a centralised ‘Road Maintenance Department’ with sufficient funds? The Engineers and other staff of this Department (Zone-wise teams can be formed) should go around the city and identify the roads which urgently need attention and fix them? The Department should have a dedicated phone number for the citizens to lodge their complaints, just as we call Electricity Department when there is no power?
The picture above is of the road in Bannimantap ‘C’ Layout, 5th Main, 2nd Cross. In spite of several complaints, this road has not been asphalted for two years now after new UGD pipes were laid. Hope our young MCC Commissioner takes notice of it!
